Drawings from 2007-2011 by Cindy Cheng
Drawing has served as the basis and focus of my studio practice for many years. It is an immediate and visceral means of visual research and exploration. However, recently I have begun to feel restricted by the conventional format of a 2-dimensional drawing hung on a flat wall. While my commitment to drawing remains strong, I am experimenting with methods of bringing the drawings into a more three dimensional realm through combining them with structures and objects constructed of a variety of store bought and found materials.
Through the process of installation I hope to re-contextualize my drawings both in relation to each other and in relation to the viewer. I wish to create a situation that pushes beyond the visual and into the experiential, to play with both physical and temporal space. I wish to experiment with the possible dialogues between specific constructions and specific drawings, between what I choose to obscure and what I choose to expose and to explore how this contributes to the generation of a mythology.
As I continue, my desire is to continuously reinvent the relationships between the drawings to the objects to myself and the viewer.
